Oracle Primavera Cloud (OPC) is a great solution for companies moving their project portfolios and scheduling to the cloud. OPC is a low cost, scalable, entry level software solution. One big difference between Oracle Primavera Cloud and Primavera P6, is that project files in OPC are in XML format and P6 project files are XER. 

Oracle Primavera Cloud helps you move to the cloud. OPC allows you to import already created schedules, resources, codes and other data from a Primavera P6 or XER file.

This article shows you how to export Primavera P6 files into XML or XER files and how to import those files into Oracle Primavera Cloud. Once imported, you can continue to work on your project in OPC with all the additional capabilities of the program. 

Exporting a Primavera P6 Project as an XML or XER File

To import a Primavera P6 Professional project into OPC, you will first need to export that project as an XML or XER file in P6. 

To start with, have a project open in Primavera P6 Professional and select File > Export. Work through the Export dialogue box, selecting either Primavera P6 (XML) or Primavera P6 (XER) as the export format. Choose a desired location to save the file.

 

How to use the export wizard in Primavera P6 professional to export a project as an XML file. The user selects "File" from the menu bar, "Export,"  and the Export Wizard dialogue box appears. The user selects "Primavera P6 XML,"  and selects Next. The user selects the file then selects next, they select the file location and select next, and finally they select "finish."

The file will download into a zipped file. Before continuing, you will need to make sure you extract the files so they are accessible. This can be done by opening the zipped file on your hard drive and selecting Extract All.

The user selects the file, and from the menu bar selects "extract all." The user selects a location to extract the folder, and selects "extract" from the dialogue box.

Importing XML and XER Files into Oracle Primavera Cloud

With the XML or XER file exported and extracted, it can now be imported into Oracle Primavera Cloud.

Once logged in to OPC, use the Object Selector to select Projects > View All Projects. Select the desired Workspace to place the project into from the Workspace list on the left.

Using the Action dropdown, select Import from P6. From this same menu, you can also import projects and data from Microsoft Project and Excel. Select the ellipses under Select File to find the XML or XER file from your harddrive, then select Next.

On the Configuration page, choose which objects to include in the import. To include everything in the import, you can leave these settings as they are and select Finish.

A dialogue box will appear, letting you know that you’ll receive a notification when the import is complete.

How to import an XML file into Oracle Primavera Cloud. The user selects "Action," "Import P6 XML FIle,"  browses Windows FIle explorer for the P6 XML file and selects it. A success message is shown after import.

With the project imported, it will now be listed in the Projects list. The Project’s schedule can be accessed by selecting Schedule > Activities. All the project data will have been successfully uploaded into Oracle Primavera Cloud.

How to open a project in Oracle Primavera Cloud. The user selects "select an item" from the menu bar, selects "project" and selects a project to open. The user then selects the "schedule" from the side panel, and selects "activities" to display the project activities.

With the project in OPC, further workflows can be performed, such as status updates, schedule comparison, and risk analysis.
