Knowing the ins and outs of Primavera P6 will not only make you a better project controller or scheduler, it could boost your career. With the demand for professionals with advanced P6 knowledge growing, adding P6 skills to your resume could help you land the job you’ve been aiming for. Could you benefit from not only having the skills, but certification to back it up?

If so, will you need official or unofficial certification? The answer greatly depends on your organization and/or your personal career goals. Read on to learn how to get P6 certification and whether the process is right for you.

What is P6 Certification?

P6 Certification is essentially a digital document awarded after successful completion of a Primavera P6 course and sometimes an exam. The certification simply shows prospective clients or employers that you and/or your team are qualified and competent in P6.

Types of P6 Certification

  • In house certification- in-house certification is a certificate offered by the company whose training program you completed. Here at Taradigm, we offer certification for all of our Primavera P6 Training programs. This type of certification can be used to show employers and clients alike that you completed Primavera P6 training from experienced professionals and that you are competent with the software. In-house certification is considered “unofficial” in that they are not provided directly by Oracle.

  • Oracle certification- Oracle offers a P6 EPPM (Enterprise Project Portfolio Management) exam that will give you Oracle certification. Typically, you will need advanced knowledge and field experience in order to pass. If you pass the exam, you will receive a certificate and will be considered officially “Oracle certified”.

Which Type of Certification is Best for Me?

The type of certification that is best for you largely depends on you or your organization’s goals for getting certified.

  • For those looking to use Primavera P6 as part of project management and scheduling, an official Oracle certification is unlikely necessary for you and your team. In this situation, you will typically be using P6 as a tool within your organization. Your team therefore won’t often need to use the software outside of your company. Taking a course that covers everything you need to know to be proficient in the program should cover your needs.

*At Taradigm we offer P6 Virtual instructor-led Basics and P6 Virtual Advanced training courses. Additionally, we are proud to offer our own Primavera P6 Self-Paced Basics and Advanced training programs for those looking to complete their course on their own time. Each course offers a certificate upon completion

  • On the other hand, if your organization is an implementation partner that routinely provides Oracle tools to clients, an Oracle certification may be ideal for you. In other words, if your team regularly needs to set up Oracle tools in a new environment, an Oracle certification could be worth it.

  • If you are an individual hoping to bolster your resume with P6 certification you should consider whether Oracle or in-house certification is necessary for your career. Often, job postings will ask you to be “P6 Certified.” It is worth noting that many times companies are unaware of the differences between “official” and “unofficial” certification. Often you’ll find that an in-house or “unofficial” certification is sufficient to indicate that you are proficient in P6.

How to Get P6 Certification

  • To get in-house certification, simply enroll in a Primavera P6 course taught by a trained professional that offers certification upon completion.

*In case you missed it- at Taradigm we offer P6 Virtual instructor-led Basics and P6 Virtual Advanced training courses. Additionally, we are proud to offer our own Primavera P6 Self-Paced Basics and Advanced training programs for those looking to complete their course on their own time. Each course offers a certificate upon completion

  • In order to get Oracle certification you must pass a 90 minute, 55 multiple choice question exam. The exam tests your knowledge of current planning and scheduling techniques as well as whether you can properly implement them in various environments. In order to pass the exam, you’ll likely need real-world experience with planning and scheduling. You’ll also need to be able to perform each function within Primavera P6 EPPM accurately. You will need to score a 64% or higher on the exam to receive a passing grade.

The Final Decision

Ultimately, whether you get certified or not and whether you choose to get Oracle or in-house certification depends on your unique needs. If you are in a role that requires you to regularly implement P6 for clients, Oracle certification may be valuable for you. On the other hand, if you plan to use your knowledge within your own company or you are a job-seeker looking to bolster your resume, an in-house certification may be sufficient.
