Time to lace up your skates and whip out the Swiss Miss! The winter holidays are here and there’s nothing better than gliding around a winter wonderland with a city backdrop. Here’s a list of 10 cool ice skating rinks for architecture lovers.

1 | Wiener Eistraum  ❄️  Vienna, Austria

Wiener Eistraum, or Vienna Ice Dream in the spectacular city of Vienna, Austria is one of the largest, most extravagant skating rinks in Europe with some 8,600 square feet of ice. The rink is actually 4 ice skating rinks connected by winding romantic paths full of holiday decorations and christmas lights. Plus, for architecture enthusiasts, the attraction sits between Vienna’s Rathaus (City Hall) and the Burgtheater (the national theater building). 

If you’re in Vienna during the winter season, you can’t miss this fantastic ice rink. While there, be sure to grab a souvenir mug of hot cocoa or Gluhwein (mulled wine) at the nearby stands. 

Wiener Eistraum opens mid January through the beginning of March. But, if you’re in Vienna around Christmas be sure to check out the Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market) in the same area. The market is open from November through early January and has all kinds of Austrian treats and treasures.

2 | Wollman Skating Rink ❄️ New York City, USA

The iconic Wollman ice skating rink located in Central park in New York City will make you feel like you’re in a Christmas movie. Surrounded by spectacular views of Manhattan, the Wollman ice skating rink has been a fixture of NYC winters since its opening in the 1950’s and was even featured in movies like Serendipity, Home Alone 2, and Love Story. Soar around the rink and take in the splendor of the big apple this winter.

  • Wednesday & Thursday: 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM

3  |  Somerset House ❄️ London, England 

Next on our list is the beautiful ice Skating Rink at Somerset House in London, England. Somerset House is a historic neoclassical style complex overlooking the River Thames. The Georgian era building features a large courtyard which, in the winter, is transformed into an ice skating dream. During the day, enjoy the finer things on ice with champagne, truffles, and classical music. When it gets dark you can skate the night away with party food and DJ’d music. While there, check out the attractions nearby including boutique shops, restaurants and a giant Christmas tree.

4 | ​​Rideau Canal Skateway ❄️ Ottawa, Canada

The Rideau Canal Skateway in Ottawa, Canada, is the world’s largest skating rink that winds about 4.5 miles around Dows lake and Downtown Ottawa. The gorgeous ice speedway also happens to run along Canada’s only UNESCO world heritage site, the Rideau Canal. Skate along this historic rink and grab tasty drinks like hot chocolate at Beavertail (a canadian treat shop) stands and boozy beverages at restaurants along the way. If you’re in Ottawa during the winter, don’t miss this unique ice skating rink. 

The Rideau Canal Skateway usually runs from January to early March, but it is weather-dependent. When open, the Skateway is free and accessible 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

*The ice must be 30 cm in thickness for the Rideau Canal Skateway to open. This means there needs to be about 10-14 straight days of -10 to -20 degree Celsius days in order for the quality of the ice to meet the standards of safe skating!

5 | Skating Ribbon at Maggie Daley Park ❄️ Chicago, USA

The Skating Ribbon at Maggie Daley Park in Chicago, Illinois, is a truly unique ice skating rink. Mimicking a ribbon, the rink twists and turns and changes in elevation all around Maggie Daley park. Skate past trees, park paths, and incredible views of the Chicago skyline. After your long day of skating, be sure to visit the Rink Cafe for some much needed refreshments.

6 | Kungsträdgården Ice Skating Rink ❄️ Stockholm, Sweden

Located in central Stockholm, the Kungsträdgården Ice Skating Rink features colorful lights, music, and a festive atmosphere. The rink is located across the street from a shopping mall and department stores and surrounded by city lights. It’s the perfect place to take a break from your holiday shopping list and enjoy some time on the ice. 

The rink is free and open to all during the winter season.

7 | The Ice Rink on Alexanderplatz ❄️ Berlin, Germany 

Skate around history on the Ice Rink at Alexanderplatz in Berlin, Germany. Enjoy the historic city of Berlin on ice and visit the nearby Christmas market for some snacks, trinkets, refreshments and even rides! Be sure to check out some of the handcrafted local fare at the Christmas market while you’re there. 

8 | Skating on Lake Louise ❄️ Alberta, Canada

For a truly unique experience, you can’t miss the ice skating on Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada. This glacial winter oasis situated just outside of the Chateau Fairmont hotel on Lake Louise features unbeatable views of  the Victoria Glacier and snow-frosted Rocky Mountains. If you can brave the cold, you can even skate around the attraction at night. Don’t miss the intricate ice sculpture created by hotel staff that sits at the center of the lake.

Lake Louise is cleared daily of snowfall. Skating is available from mid-December to mid-April, depending on conditions.

9 | The Ice Rink at The Cosmopolitan ❄️ Las Vegas, USA

Looking for a little glitz and glamor? The Ice Rink at the Cosmopolitan above the Las Vegas strip is the spot for you. Every year the Boulevard pool is transformed into an ice skating rink and winter wonderland. Enjoy your time on the ice and order a glamorous cocktail by the cozy fire pits. Plus, every 30 minutes enjoy a snow shower from above.

10 | City Park Ice Rink, Budapest ❄️ Hungary

The beautiful city of Budapest annually turns its city park into one of the biggest ice skating rinks in Europe. Known at Városligeti Műjégpálya, in Hungary, the ice rink sits just below historic and beautiful Vajdahunyad Castle. You’ll feel like royalty on ice.
